About
Please join us as we celebrate Bernie’s career at CBA!
Bernie’s journey with Christian Brothers Academy began in September 1971 when he arrived on campus as a freshman. Aside from his college years and a brief time away, Bernie has been a beloved and constant presence on campus ever since—so much so that many students and new faculty were convinced he lived at CBA (he did not).
After earning his B.S. in Physical Education from Slippery Rock University in 1979, Bernie returned to his alma mater in 1981 to begin what would become a decades-long career of service. He started as a physical education teacher and quickly became a key part of the school community, taking on coaching roles in freshman and JV baseball and basketball, as well as leading the intramural sports program.
Bernie’s dedication extended well beyond the classroom and gym. Working part-time under Br. John Loehr on the maintenance team, he found another calling—caring for the campus itself. In 1992, he became Director of Plant and Facilities, a role he held for 33 years with unwavering pride and care. Under his leadership, CBA’s 157-acre campus was maintained with precision, pride, and a true sense of stewardship. During this period Bernie and his wife, Karen, sent two boys to CBA, Chris ’01 and Matthew ’04, continuing the family legacy.
For over four decades, Bernie gave his time, talent, and heart to the Academy. As he retires, we celebrate not only his incredible career but also the legacy he leaves behind in every field, classroom, and hallway he helped maintain.
